Basil Walters, Observer staff reporter
Tuesday, August 02, 2005

Caribbean scholar Dr Clinton Hutton is now doing research for a new book on the history and development of Jamaican music which, he expects, will be completed in two years.

"I've got a fellowship from the university (of the West Indies) for two years to do research and write a book called The Social and Aesthetic Foundation of Popular Jamaican Music 1952 to 1972," Dr Hutton told the Sunday Observer.....read whole story at Jamaica Observer

Kazmo's Continues to Bring Irie Nights to Denver

Denver, Co Kazmo's Nightclub in downtown Denver has seen its share of challenges along the way, but its owner, Victor Gomez, has not wavered in his continued efforts to bring positive Reggae music to his lounge just off downtown each and every Saturday night.

Repeated challenges have included multiple promoters, ego and financial issues arising from talent and these same promoters, and the continued struggle that is, as one reggae promoter has said, the enigma of trying to make reggae stick in Denver.

Spellbinder, a local reggae celebrity, has become the host of Irie Nights, providing a face and energy unparalleled throughout Denver.  "Spellbinder is a great boost of energy all through the night,"  Jeff Laurita, a regular visitor to Kazmo's has repeatedly said.  "The music that the various DJ's play, along with Spellbinder, creates a great atmosphere that I shall return to regularly."

Over the past 12 months, some of Denver's hottest DJ's has been seen to come through Kazmo's.  DJ Uplifter, who migh have been seen opening up for ReggaeMovement.com's Anniversary show with Steel Pulse, has made repeated appearances, and Youthman Promotions, Bloodpreshah, and Rankin' Sound, all Denver area DJ's, can be seen on any given Saturday Night.

Dedicated to a Roots format, Kazmo's provides a lounge feel in an intimate atmosphere.  Roots Reggae can be heard every Saturday night, with regular giveaways, new features each week, and a fresh approach to the DJ night. Kazmo's is located at 1341 Kalamath, at the corner of 14th and Kalamath just off the Auraria Campus in Denver, Co.   303-629-7904 MAP

Reggaeton is on the rise....for now

BY RAFER GUZMAN / Newsday
07/31/2005

When the Latin/hip-hop fusion called reggaeton began popping up on urban stations a couple of years ago, few sensed the start of a trend.

Now, the Daddy Yankee tune "Gasolina" is flooding the airwaves, and other reggaeton and Spanish-language singles are picking up steam, including Wisin y Yandel's "Rakata," the Frankie J and Baby Bash collaboration "Obsession (No Es Amore)" and Don Omar's "Reggaeton Latino."

Rap stations are playing reggaeton during their nightly dance mixes. Suddenly, the music is seemingly everywhere, from cell phone rings to the loudspeakers at baseball games....read whole story at Delawareonline
